We aim to provide ‘out of hours’ telephone support to anyone concerned about mental health, or that of someone they know, and to provide mental health information.

Our trained operators have access to a database that contains details of over 800 local and national services and support groups.

We aim to provide immediate emotional support for anyone experiencing distress, and aim to empower callers through information to make their own choices about how their health care needs may be met.

Why Is It Needed?

The Government have a National Service Framework, which states the following – Standard 3 Any individual with a common mental health problem should: be able to make contact round the clock with the local services necessary to meet their needs and receive adequate care.

Local Health and Social Care need to ensure that advice and help is consistent. NHS Direct should provide a route to specialist Telephone Helplines.

Information is to be available for people with mental health problems, including access to local self-help groups and support services.

The Wellbeing & Mental Health Helpline is a benchmark service for good practice documented in the government’s National Service Framework Service Models and Examples of Good Practice.

Many people can feel isolated and are unaware of the support, services and resources available to them.

The Helpline is available 365 days a year during evenings and weekends when many other services may be closed. Helpline Number 0800 915 4640
